Program Features

We recruit district students interested in pursuing a career in aviation at all levels and ensures they are highly qualified for positions within the aviation industry and throughout our community. As part of their participation in the flight pathway program, students will receive a sequence of aviation specific coursework, dual credit opportunities with running start and apprenticeship toward aviation careers such as FAA AMT Mechanic, Pilots, Controllers, Dispatchers, Loadmasters, and other career pathways.

We are building a wide array of professional opportunities that engage participants in active learning, resources, and innovation to meet the needs of our local community and organizations through a network of professional educators, employers, workforce agencies, and business leaders who are invested in promoting positive outcomes that benefit our youth with more opportunities.

Current Projects

Building Airplanes and Young Careers

Our program results not only in the completion of an airplane but also in building young men and women career skills. The opportunities to learn teamwork, focus, leadership and hands-on skills are unique and students who complete our program consistently report (as do their parents) that the skills learned in the program have shaped them as people and prepared them for their next steps in the real world.

Drone Lab

This course gives introductory credit toward basic aerodynamics and fundamentals of aircraft design. Credit can be used for running start and covers topics of Newton’s Laws, Conservation of Energy, Conservation of Momentum, Motion, Forces and Acceleration, Force Balance Equations, the Engineering Method and more.

Aviation Mechanic Internship I

Hands on building a kit experimental aircraft over the course of a year under the guidance of an FAA Certified Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic.

Aviation Mechanic Internship II

The course gives credit toward apprenticeship hours and direct certification testing upon graduation to enter the work force with an A&P Rating Certification.

Intro to Flight Program

Interested students may choose to take the FAA Ground School and begin receiving simulated and actual flight instruction toward a private and commerical pilot rating.

Drone Operator Program

Interested students may choose to obtain the drone operators certificate that will give immediate access to required skills for commercial drone operator license.

Curriculum

High-School STEM

Our STEM Aviation Program, pursuing FAA certification and Running Start, provides aviation education to high school students in grades 9–12, with 12 to 20 students participating each year.  The program educates students in the principles of aircraft design and construction, physics of flight, and concepts of metallurgy and composites as we explore opportunities and careers in the aviation field.

9th Grade Curriculum

The ninth-grade course will provide the foundation for advanced exploration in the areas of flying, aerospace engineering, and unmanned aircraft systems. Students will learn about engineering practices, problem-solving, and the innovations and technological developments that have made today’s aviation and aerospace industries possible.
Students will look at the problem-solving practices and innovative leaps that transformed space exploration from the unimaginable to the common in a single generation. Students will also gain historical perspective, starting from the earliest flying machines and leading to the wide variety of modern aircraft and the integral role they play in making today’s world work.

10th Grade Curriculum

In the Introduction to Flight Course, students pursuing the pilot and UAS tracks will take a closer look at the aircraft they may one day operate. Students will begin with an exploration of the types of aircraft in use today before going on to learn how aircraft are made and how they fly. Students will understand how aircraft are categorized, be able to identify their parts, and learn about aircraft construction techniques and materials. They will gain an in-depth understanding of the forces of flight—lift, weight, thrust, and drag—including how to make key calculations. They will then touch on aircraft design, looking at stability, aircraft controls, and maneuvering flight. The course will conclude with a focus on career skills related to these topics.

11th Grade Curriculum

In This course is foundational for both manned and unmanned aviation and will prepare students to take either of two Federal Aviation Administration tests: the Private Pilot Knowledge Test or the Part 107 Remote Pilot Knowledge Test. Topics include: pre-flight procedures, airspace, radio communications, aviation phraseology, regulations, airport operations, aviation safety, weather, cockpit management, and emergency procedures.

12th Grade Curriculum

The capstone course is the culmination of the student learning experience. The students will work as individuals or in small groups to study and report on an approved aviation topic of their choosing. The goal of this capstone course is to allow students to demonstrate an understanding of a contemporary topic in aviation as it relates to flying. The curriculum will include presentations and activities to help guide student research and project development as well as suggestions for topics or projects that can be adapted to match available resources.
